FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
PHNOM PENH—On Friday, 16 August 2019, the Cambodia Oscar Selection Committee (COSC) will announce the film chosen to represent Cambodia for the International Feature Film Award of the 92nd Oscars ceremony.
“This year was historic for the committee as members had to vote between two films,” Ms. Arthur said. The two films submitted to the committee by the 15 July deadline are In the Life of Music directed by Caylee So and Sok Visal, as well as Baokchambab, directed by Manish Sharma. “We would like to recognize both films as being worthy to represent Cambodia, but we can only send one,” said Ms. Arthur.
“On each ballot there are two rounds of voting. The first round is a simple yes or no – would the film be good enough to represent Cambodia. Both films passed the first round,” Ms. Arthur said.
Ms. Arthur went on to explain that for the second round each ballot lists categories that committee members must vote a number between 1 and 10. These numbers are added and the film with the highest total score is chosen as the submission. The categories are story, direction, acting, cinematography, sound, music and universal theme.
Each year the Oscars are hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences in Hollywood. Each country may submit one film for the Best International Feature Film category and only the sanctioned organization may choose the film submission.
“It is an honor for our committee members to take part in this process for this prestigious event,” said Ms. Mariam Arthur, chairperson of COSC. “Their expertise in the Khmer film industry makes the members the best qualified to choose which film should represent Cambodia.”
In order for films to qualify, they must have a theatrical release in Cambodia between October 1st and September 30th of each year, among other requirements. Filmmakers are required to notify COSC by July 15 of each year of their intention to submit.
“We encourage filmmakers to contact us before the post-production of their film, so we can review the requirements with them and help make sure they meet all of The Academy qualifications,” said Ms. Arthur.
The Oscars ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, 9 February 2020. The broadcast is live in Cambodia on Monday morning 10 February 2020.
Voting committee members include: Ly Bun Yim, Ly You Sreng, Dy Saveth, Tep Rindaro, Klot Rattana, Bou Panha, Eab Cheameng and Sar Kessara.
