…there are no statistics on actual reading. We do not know how many books the average Cambodian reads per year or how many minutes on average they spend on reading.

Most young Cambodians read mainly because of their academic obligations. They tend to read only if it is assigned by lecturers or to prepare for examinations. Few would read on their free time, or out of a habit, said a group of junior students at the Institute of Foreign Languages. One of them told me: “I find reading boring and do not have commitments to read. Rather I will see myself on social media or play games to kill time.

They said they grew up in environments that did not encourage students to read. All they did was memorize lessons that teachers assigned, which discourages students from finding enjoyment in reading.</span>

I read a lot of guides and tutorials.  I prefer reading to watching videos.

i find Khmer people love their leisure. Instead of taking their kids to the library, they take their kids out to pick apples or the casino. They like to think about what to do the next 2 weeks, not the next 2 years

The problem with a lot of poor people is that they blame society for being poor…but if you go to the library and bookstores….crickets. Go the nightclub and they all over the place dancing. Poor people dance more and dance well.

How do you know? Did you go dancing on the dance floor and witnessed it?

Because one of the reason why poor people are poor is that they spend more time having fun. They are dancing and having a good time. More educated and financially well off people are studying and making money.
