Midwife Kate Taylor is helping improve childbirth and reduce maternal mortality in Cambodia

Midwives play a vital role in bringing life into the world, but Kate Taylor is also doing her bit to stop deaths which should be preventable.

Her charity The 2H Project has helped improve the births of tens of thousands of babies in Cambodia, where a lack of access to obstetrics and health services can make childbirth a risky process.

While she has always been aware of those risks, the Adelaide resident gained a stronger appreciation of the importance of maternal care when she was an expectant mother herself.

“In my first birth, if I actually lived in a low-resourced country, I possibly would’ve died,” Ms Taylor said.

“I haemorrhaged and it was only because we have great services and great medications that I am still here today.”

Following her birth experience, Ms Taylor was inspired to volunteer abroad and become part of a humanitarian project, and ended up in Cambodia.
