Autistic Cambodian girl, four, drowns in a pond at Texas Buddhist temple after slipping out of a ceremony without her mother noticing then removing her shoes and socks off to enter the water

A four-year-old autistic Cambodian girl has drowned after falling into a pond at a Buddhist temple in Texas after slipping out of a ceremony in the temple unnoticed to enter the water.

The child, who has not been named, had gone to the Wat Angkorchum Cambodian Buddhist Temple in Houston, Texas, with her mother on Sunday.

As her mother and other worshipers were inside, the girl wandered out of the temple and down the steps to make her way towards the pond. She took off her shoes and socks before entering the water.

By the time her mother and the others realized she was gone, she was already in the water and completely submerged.
